How hard is it?

71⁄2 miles, moderate with some ups and downs

Three steep climbs will help you to walk off a bit of the Christmas pudding in the skirts of the Quantock Hills. From the cosy Rising Sun at West Bagborough you climb steeply up Lydeard Hill, slope down to deep sunk farms and up across Gib Hill, then drop down through the woods and up again to Cothelstone Hill and a giant view: the Blackdowns, Quantocks and Exmoor; the Blackdowns and Mendips; Wales and the Severn Estuary.

The walk Up lane beside Rising Sun pub to Lydeard Hill, then east via Bishpool Farm (197342) to Lambridge Farm (201338). Southwest across Gib Hill and Cothelstone Hill (190327). Southeast down to corner of wood (193324), then take bridleway southwest through Paradise Wood to Cothelstone. Take field path northwest through Cothelstone Park. Cross road (175322), then half right to road (174326). Up road for 350m, then left (175329, “bridleway”) to road (171331) and West Bagborough.
